Free Music Sessions and Jams
One important way that folk music is passed along is by artists learning from one another by imitation or informal instruction. Consequently, PineCone partners with organizations to present ongoing participatory music sessions in bluegrass music, Irish music, and shape note singing. These “knee-to-knee” learning experiences are critical because they not only offer opportunities for learning and mentoring, but also they help foster a sense of community and belonging among folk music enthusiasts.
Sessions are free and open to the public, and all levels of players and singers are welcome at the sessions, as are folks to sit back and enjoy the music!
And, if you've never been to a jam or session and want to know more about how they work, here's a primer for your reference: Download Jam Session Etiquette
Bluegrass Jam
The bluegrass jam session is on the move again! Join the musicians at the Busy Bee Café in downtown Raleigh on the second and fourth Monday of every month. The jam runs from 7 - 10 p.m. Whether you’re a first-time jammer or a veteran, you’re welcome to learn the tunes and play along, or just observe! Please contact Doug Pratt or David Hedrick for more information.
Irish Music Sessions
PineCone and Tír na nÓg co-sponsor an open, Irish-style session every Sunday starting at 3 p.m. All musicians, singers, instruments, dancers, and listeners are welcome. Bring your favorite tunes and songs to share or play along. The session features mostly Irish-style songs and tunes (jigs, reels, etc.), but also welcomes offerings or suggestions from other musical genres. Anyone wishing to lead or start a song or tune for the group has the opportunity to do so. Musicians of all abilities are encouraged to join in. Please contact session leader Charlie Muse with any questions.
Shape Note Sing
The Shape Note Sing is held the fourth Sunday of each month. Shape Note Singing is for everyone—beginners and experienced singers are welcome. Music is available for anyone who doesn’t have a book. For more information, please visit the Shape Note website, www.ncshapenote.org, for more information about Shape Note Singing. |
