Alice Gerrard has announced the guest artists joining her for her 90th Birthday Concert on Saturday July 13, 2024. The concert is part of PineCone’s Down Home Concert Series at the AJ Fletcher Theater in Raleigh’s Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts.
The show will feature songs from Alice’s newest album “Sun to Sun.” No Depression Magazine says the album “…reveals Alice Gerrard at her very best, writing lyrics and music that convey the shortcomings of human culture while also reveling in the resilience of human nature.”
Alice will also be playing tunes and sharing stories she learned over the years from folks like Luther Davis, Tommy Jarrell, Elizabeth Cotton and Doc Boggs.
The all-star house band features Tatiana Hargreaves (fiddle), Rebecca Branson Jones (pedal steel), Reed Stutz (mandolin) and Jim Watson (bass).

Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are a legendary folk duo who’ve won multiple Grammy Awards for their work in children’s music. Their latest project “All Wigged Out” is a musical comedy about breast cancer.
Ginny Hawker and Alice share a love for the songs of the original Carter Family. Ginny grew up singing tenor with her family in Southwest Virginia.
Gordy Hinners has been playing traditional music for more than 50 years. He spent years touring with the legendary Green Grass Cloggers and with Ralph Blizzard and The New Southern Ramblers.
Phil Jamison is a well-known dance caller and old time musician. He is the author of Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics: Roots and Branches of Southern Appalachian Dance.
Kay Justice has recorded with Alice as a part of the Herald Angel Band. She is an accomplished singer, performer, and teacher.
Eliza Meyer is a Raleigh native and student at UNC Chapel Hill. She is currently working with Alice on her archives. Eliza’s latest album is “Hello Stranger” that was released when she was still in High School.
Joe Newberry took up guitar and banjo as a teenager and hasn’t put them down since. He tours widely, is an accomplished banjo player, songwriter and was a frequent performer on A Prairie Home Companion.
Jim Watson has played with Alice for decades as a friend and member of the Piedmont Melody Makers. He is one of the founders of the Red Clay Ramblers and has toured widely with Robin & Linda Williams and their Fine Group.
Beverly Smith is a well-respected old time fiddler, songwriter and singer. She and Alice have sung and recorded early country duets together.
Joseph Decosimo is an accomplished banjo and fiddle player. Alice is featured on Joseph’s latest album “While You Were Slumbering” is out on Sleepy Cat Records.
Andy Cahan is an old-time fiddle player who learned from many of the same players that Alice visited and befriended around Galax, Virginia. He and Joseph Decosimo have a new album out called “Rare Old Fiddle & Banjo Duets.”
