With her one-of-a-kind voice and piano, Iris DeMent brings enraptured audiences along as she’s “workin’ on a world” (to borrow the title of her most recent album) that’s brighter and more just with every note. Her iconic voice and powerful songwriting first was revealed on her landmark debut, Infamous Angel, which recently marked its 30th anniversary and included songs like “Our Town,” “Let the Mystery Be,” and “Mama’s Opry” that are now considered Americana classics. She received the Americana Music Association’s Trailblazer Award in 2017 and was a favorite duet partner of John Prine, on his song “In Spite of Ourselves” and several others. In any song, from any era, DeMent’s music comes straight from the heart, and it’ll find its way into your heart, too.
At her sold-out Down Home Concert on Jan. 31, 2025, we loved hearing some of DeMent’s newest songs, like “Workin’ on a World,” “Warriors of Love,” and “Say a Good Word,” as well as some of her timeless classics. She took a somber view of current events, but made us laugh quite a bit too — who knew she can sing better with lipstick on, as she shared from the piano as she paused for a touch-up?
We also loved singing along with opener Ana Egge, who made the world feel a whole lot brighter with songs like “We Are One” and “Dance Around the Room With Me.” Egge also played guitar and mandolin during DeMent’s set, and they were joined by bassist Liz Draper.
