Kickin Grass

Kickin Grass will release a new album, Walk With Me, on July 24. Since the band's last album was released in 2008, founders Jamie and Lynda Dawson and Patrick Walsh have welcomed two new members: Pattie Hopkins (fiddle, vocals) and Hank Smith (banjo).

Lynda, Kickin Grass' primary lead vocalist, said in an article in Bluegrass Today that Walk With Me intentionally addresses large issues of life and death, hope and heartbreak. Since their last release, Walsh's wife died from cancer, and Jamie's brother passed suddenly. In the midst of the loss, the Dawsons celebrated the birth of a daughter.

Over the last decade, Raleigh-based bluegrass and Americana group Kickin Grass has become one of the most visible groups on the Piedmont's roots music circuit. Consisting of mandolinist Jamie Dawson; fiddler Pattie Hopkins; bassist Patrick Walsh; banjo player Hank Smith; and guitarist and songwriter Lynda Dawson--a musician whom Nashville Public Radio's Bluegrass Breakdown host Dave Higgs praises as "a truly gifted songwriter"--Kickin Grass draws on traditional and contemporary bluegrass to create a sound that is equally vintage and progressive. According to Higgs, "[Lynda Dawson] writes intelligently crafted lyrics, which she marries to unforgettable melodies."

Since their inception, Kickin Grass has released three acclaimed albums, including 2003's Backroads, 2006's On the Short Rows, and 2008's self-titled album. The Raleigh News & Observer has praised the group's recordings as "a delightful display of hard-driving, lyrically nuanced bluegrass." Kickin Grass maintains a steady touring schedule, with recent appearances at MerleFest, Greensboro's Pickin' in the Park Festival, and the Bell Buckle Music Cruise, as well as dates throughout the Piedmont.

The original band members met in late 2001/early 2002 as the accompanying band for the Apple Chill Cloggers, and they played at festivals, colleges, and international venues with the cloggers. Their first show just as the band was in February 2002 at Remy's on Route 87 in lower Alamance County (the Remy's building is is now a community hall for lower Alamance and upper Chatham residents, and they still host live music events!).

In 2002, Kickin Grass won the Best Band In Raleigh competition sponsored by the Hibernian and the Guitar Center, and they used the $2,000 prize money for studio time to record their first release, Backroads. All band members past and present feel a strong connection to and passion for traditional and roots music, as well as the local communities and organizations that continue these traditions. Many of their songs reference North Carolina's culture, music, and geography. Their third and self-titled CD was released on the Superfan Records label, a local music non-profit dedicated to supporting Raleigh music. They are currently working on their fourth album, which will feature the current lineup playing new original material, to be released in early 2012.
