Magnolia Klezmer Band

Together for more than a decade and a half, the Triangle's Magnolia Klezmer Band numbers from 12 to 15 members on any given night. The group formed in 1996 to perform the vibrant Eastern European Jewish music known as klezmer. Klezmer is a celebratory, largely instrumental style that frequently features winds, brass, accordion, fiddle, and percussion . The band incorporates into its repertoire other traditional musical genres and tunes, including Balkan, American, and Parisian jazz, polka, classical, Vaudeville, cabaret, and songs written to accompany Eastern European folk dances.

Since their inception, Magnolia Klezmer Band has garnered statewide acclaim for their performances at Duke University's Jazz on the Patio performance series, the Arts Center of Carrboro's 30th anniversary celebration, Weaver Street Market's Jazz Brunch, the Raleigh International Festival, the Homegrown series at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, and many other events and venues. The group has also honored their Jewish heritage with concerts commemorating Israeli Independence Day and religious observations such as Purim, Passover, and Chanukah. In 2006, members of the band were interviewed by host Frank Stasio on WUNC's The State of Things, and in 2007 the group appeared at the PineCone-sponsored Music of the Carolinas concert, a performance that was recorded and released as the album A Trip to Amerika in 2007.

In 2010, the Magnolia Klezmer Band was asked to appear at the North Carolina Museum of History as part of the opening celebration for an exhibit entitled Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina. In 2011, the smaller satellite group of the larger ensemble recorded the album Working Klez.

Former director of Duke Performances Kathy A. Silberger says, "I have presented the Magnolia Klezmer Band on two occasions as part of an outdoor summer series, and they packed the house each time; they had the audience singing along and even getting up to dance. Their performances were punctuated with knowledgeable and clever comments about the music and its history, and the repartee between the performers made everyone feel part of the show."
