Nancy Mamlin, is a dance caller from the Piedmont area of North Carolina who has been calling dances for more than 30 years. She is one of the founders of the group “Dare to be Square” and calls dances for PineCone at TransferCo in Raleigh.
“We all come to a dance with a different perspective- and mine changes depending on the role I’m playing at a given dance,” wrote Nancy in an essay for New England Folk Festival Association. “Each perspective teaches you something different, and I think good organizers can see all of them. I started out just having a “dancer” perspective, then took roles as organizer, musician, and caller. Lucky for me, it’s still a lot of fun, and I get to do it with enough frequency to keep me in practice and pretty well-satisfied.”
Nancy is a retired educator and is the author of the book Preparing Special Education Teachers.
