Broaden Your Range with Arpeggios with Abigail Dowd

Wednesday, February 9, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
  • This event has passed.

Put down your pick and broaden what you can do with a single chord. With a focus on arpeggios, this workshop dives into finger-picking patterns to give more variety in the way you play. Abigail will take you back to her classical guitar roots to demonstrate how right hand technique is where it is at! We’ll look at “programming” ourselves to play three- and four-finger picking patterns, as well as keeping the rhythm using the thumb as bass while using the other fingers for ornamentation. This course will feature progressive exercises and examples to help you build dexterity. We will start simple and explore the ways that arpeggios can make practicing, playing and composing more interesting.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Abigail Dowd grew up under the longleaf pines of North Carolina and comes from a long line of musicians, including her great-grandfather who owned a music store where four generations would gather to play and sing. Playing an instrument was a family requirement: Abigail taught herself to play the guitar at 14 and later went on to study classical guitar with the late Danny Infantino.

Known for her storytelling and command of an audience, she has been called “a writer of the highest caliber” (All Scene Eye). Acoustic Guitar magazine has described her sound as “The guitar-driven introspective folk of the 1970s is a touchstone, but so are blues and roots rock ’n’ roll.” Dowd’s latest album, Beautiful Day, was produced by Jason Richmond (Steep Canyon Rangers, Rising Appalachia, Dom Flemons) and released on April 23. Recorded live with a full band, it is full of resilience, hope and grit.
