CANCELED – PineCone Youth Bluegrass Jam – Cary

Saturday, March 28, 2020 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
  • This event has passed.
Jam Session

PineCone’s Youth Bluegrass jams are just for young musicians (ages 18 and under) who play string instruments, including standard bluegrass instruments such as acoustic fiddle (violin), mandolin, guitar, 5-string banjo, upright bass, and Dobro (or resophonic slide guitar) as well as viola, cello, ukulele, bass guitar, and more. Even if you don’t play an instrument, you can always come sing along!¬†Everyone is always welcome, and the more people come, the more fun every jam is. Jams are made up of the people who come, and each person always has something different to contribute. Even for participants who don’t know much about bluegrass, it’s a great way to dip a toe in collaborating by ear!

All are welcome at these fun, friendly jams that provide opportunities for young musicians to get to know each other and learn about bluegrass jamming. These programs are focused on skill building, including:

  • Repertoire building: learning one or more new songs
  • Ensemble playing: how to play music as a group
  • Improvisation: how to start playing unprepared, unrehearsed material, without sheet music
  • Bluegrass history: sometimes we talk a little bit about where the music comes from, its traditional roots, and the contributions of the style’s pioneers.

PineCone Youth Jams are casual, and our facilitators work to ensure that there’s something for everyone, from beginner players who are curious about jamming to more experienced players looking for more of a challenge. These programs are NOT performances, recitals, lessons, or competitions.

This month’s jam will be facilitated by local musicians Jef Walter and Sam Stage.

Each jam is a little bit different, depending on who shows up. Songs will be determined depending on the skill levels of the students who come to the event. More experienced music students have the option to come prepared with a song to lead, either an instrumental or a singing song where they sing the verses/chorus, preferably with only 3 or 4 chords throughout (for simplicity in teaching) – this is not a requirement to participate.
