Concert

On the final day of Chanukah, PineCone and the Museum of History are excited to share some klezmer music as part of this year’s Music of the Carolinas series! Freylach Time is one of the most popular klezmer bands in North Carolina. Canned food donations will be accepted at this concert for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, a nonprofit organization that provides food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina.

The core trio, formed in Durham  in 1998, features Riki Friedman on clarinet, Mike McQuown on accordion, and Hal Schnee on string bass. They have performed klezmer music together at countless concerts, weddings, bar & bat mitzvahs, and Jewish community celebrations throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. As part of the 2015 Carrobo Music Fest, Friedmen led the group Freylach Klezmer-Old Time Jamboree, playing a fusion of traditional klezmer and old time tunes. The Food Bank works with a network of 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults.  With branches in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, Southern Pines and Wilmington, the Food Bank distributed nearly 54 million pounds of food and non-food essentials last year.

This is PineCone and the Museum of History’s seventh year pairing a food drive with the December Music of the Carolinas concert. In addition, the Museum will be collecting food for the Food Bank throughout the first two weeks of December! There are more than 650,000 people in central and eastern NC who are food insecure, meaning they are unable to consistently access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for an active and healthy life. One third of these are children. You can help by bringing at least two cans of food to the Freylach Time concert.  Child-friendly items such as pop-top cans, cereal bars, fruit cups, peanut butter, and healthy fruit snacks are particularly needed. Holiday food drives are a very important part of the Food Bank’s year-end efforts, and your help is greatly appreciated!

Music of the Carolinas concerts are made possible thanks to the support of Williams Mullen and the NC Museum of History Associates
