This bluegrass double-header explores some of the varied directions bluegrass music can be played in the hands of different musicians. Love Canon (4:30-6 p.m.) is a band of classically trained musicians who play some of your favorite ’80s tunes in a bluegrass style, while North Carolina’s own Tellico (3-4 p.m.) play original tunes rooted in bluegrass. Tellico is also among the 30 bands selected for IBMA’s official Bluegrsas Ramble showcases during World of Bluegrass in Raleigh this fall!
From the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville, Virginia’s Love Canon is a band of conservatory-trained musicians playing bluegrass versions of your favorite ’80s hits. Led by guitarist Jesse Harper and banjo wiz Adam Larrabee, Darrell Muller on bass, Andy Thacker on mandolin, and Jay Starling on resonator guitar round out this the virtuoso group of string musicians.
Kicking off the afternoon will be Asheville based band Tellico, whose members’ past band credits include Dehlia Low, Town Mountain, and more. Anya Hinkle’s and Stig Stiglets’ standout vocals join forces with Aaron Ballance’s flowing and soaring dobro and Jed Willis’ textured and expressive mandolin, rooted in the mountain music they grew up with while pushing tradition into a modern Americana sound aesthetic.
Before the music starts on stage, musicians ages 18 and under who play guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bass, or banjo are invited to participate in a facilited jam to kick off the afternoon. From 2-3 p.m., local musicians Lynda and Jamie Dawson will be on hand to faciliate the jam, share some tips and tricks, and answer questions about bluegrass jamming.
