Tickets are on sale for the 2023 Down Home Concert Series this month.  All concerts begin at 7:30 and are in the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts, 2 E South St in downtown Raleigh.

WED MAY 31 – The North Carolina Heritage Awards in AJ Fletcher Opera Theater, Raleigh NC

This special evening honors traditional artists who represent North Carolina’s folk arts traditions. Heritage Award recipients include masters of such traditions as string band, gospel, balladry and blues music; master storytellers; and experts in craft traditions that include pottery, basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, boatbuilding and carving. This show is produced in partnership with the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The Down Home Season concludes with an evening of inspirational music from the rich gospel traditions of rural North Carolina. We are bringing together bluegrass, string band, quartet gospel and the soulful rhythms heard regularly in Black Churches across Eastern North Carolina. The evening features Faith & Harmony, The Cockman Family Bluegrass Band, The Glorifying Vines Sisters and more than a few surprises. This show is produced in partnership with The Music Maker Foundation with support from the North Carolina Arts Council.

The Steel Wheels have played for PineCone audiences as a part of the Down Home Series and at IBMA’s World of Bluegrass. They make their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and when we’re lucky, bring their tasty blend of roots, bluegrass and Americana down to Raleigh.

Sierra Hull is a multi-IBMA Award winner including the 2022 Mandolin Player of the Year. Her husband Justin Moses is also widely recognized as a player and recording artist. His critically acclaimed debut solo record “Fall Like Rain” is a breath-taking collection of songs and tunes that showcase his abilities on dobro, guitar, as a singer and composer.

Old Time Banjo and Fiddle player Joseph Decosimo opens the show with a trio performing music from his new album “While You Were Slumbering.” Music writer David Menconi called the Sleepy Cat Records release “…a spectacular new album.”

March 3rd is the 100th anniversary of Doc Watson’s birth. To mark the occasion, The Kruger Brothers are coming down to Raleigh to play some of the songs “…that Doc has taught to me.” Jens and Uwe Kruger immigrated to the United States from their native Switzerland to study at the knee of Doc Watson. They’ve carried on his legacy and will celebrate with us on Doc’s 100th Birthday. Joining them will be The Piney Woods Boys who specialize in the old time music of Doc’s father in law Gaither Carlton.

FRI APR 14, 2023 – Dawn Landes, Alice Gerrard, Emily Frantz (from Watchhouse), Rissi Palmer, Charly Lowry, Lizzy Ross (from Violet Bell) and Kamara Thomas reimagine The Liberated Women’s Songbook in the AJ Fletcher Opera Theater, Raleigh NC

“The Liberated Women’s Songbook” is a collection of 77 songs that trace the history of the women’s liberation movement. First published in 1971, the collection remains an important document of the time. Yep Roc recording artist Dawn Landes is pulling together a group of friends to reimagine and update some of the songs included in Jerry Silverman’s iconic songbook.

“It’s an honor to get to work with this group of women. This is going to be something special.”

SAT APR 22, 2023 – The Wailin’ Jennys in Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh NC

TICKETS: Lower $45/50 member/general; Orchestra/Mezz $40/45 member/general; Balcony $30/35 member/general

NPR called the Wailin’ Jennys  “…more than just impeccable bluegrass harmonizers; they’re also terrific bandleaders who give their traditional roots music a sense of real reverence.”

The band remains a favorite for PineCone audiences.
