Old Time Fiddle/Banjo Duo Workshop with Joseph Decosimo & Tatiana Hargreaves

Saturday, February 26, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • This event has passed.
Workshop

The fiddle banjo duo is central to the sound of string band music in the North Carolina Piedmont. Joseph Decosimo and Tatiana Hargreaves lead a workshop exploring the sound made famous by classic Piedmont duos like Joe and Odell Thompson or AC Overton and Lauchlin Shaw. For the first half of the workshop, the fiddlers will be with Tatiana and banjos will be with Joseph. Then, we’ll all come together to discuss some strategies, consider some favorite pairings, and play the tune we’re learning together. The afternoon will end with a public jam in Burial Beer led by the instructors.

Schedule

2:00 – 3:15 – Fiddle Class with Tatiana Hargreaves
2:00 – 3:15 – Banjo Class with Joseph Decosimo
3:15 – 3:45 – BREAK
3:45 – 5:00 – Banjos and Fiddles Together
5:00 – Happy Hour Old Time Jam at Burial Beer

About the Instructors

Over the past decade, Tatiana Hargreaves has been on the forefront of an up and coming generation of old time, bluegrass and new acoustic musicians. From placing first at the Clifftop Appalachian Fiddle Contest, to her bluegrass fiddling on Laurie Lewis’ GRAMMY-nominated album The Hazel And Alice Sessions, Hargreaves shows a musical fluency that flows between old time and bluegrass worlds with ease. She has toured with musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, and Jake Blount. She currently tours with banjo player extraordinaire Allison de Groot and teaches bluegrass fiddle at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Her newest album, Soleadad, is out now.

Raised in the rich traditional music community around Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, Joseph Decosimo is a leading performer of old-time fiddle and banjo music. Decosimo is a traditional musician and folklorist with a deep respect and love for the older sounds of his home state, Appalachia, and the broader American South. His old-time fiddling and banjo playing have introduced listeners around the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia to the richness and vibrancy of the region’s musical traditions. Based in Durham, North Carolina, he currently performs old-time fiddle, banjo, and songs anywhere people are willing to listen. A skilled teacher, he has taught a number of workshops, festivals, and even in a traditional music program at a university. Besides performing the music, he researches and writes about it: He holds a PhD in American Studies and an MA in Folklore.
