Jam Session

Calling all youth musicians who play guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and bass! You’re invited to jam with other young musicians in the area who enjoy playing the same types of music you do!

Building on the youth jams that the Dawsons led this past summer, this jam will include some skill building while learning a featured song at the beginning of each jam. This month’s featured song will be “Worried Man Blues” in the key of A (the chords are A, D & E). “Worried Man Blues” uses the standard chord progression, the 1, 4 and 5 chords, but because it’s in the key of A (one whole step up from the key of G), the chords are also one whole step up: A, D and E. You can refer to the video and lyrics at the right for reference. (January’s featured tune, “Dooley,” was in the key of G.  Dooley uses the same standard chord progression, the 1, 4 and 5 chords of the key of G – the chords were G, C & D.)

Participants are also encouraged to bring a prepared song to sing and/or play with the group, but this is not required for participation.

Songs played at past youth jams have included:

  • Angeline the Baker (D)
  • Arkansas Traveler (D)
  • Soldiers Joy (D)
  • Whiskey Before Breakfast (D)
  • Liberty (D)
  • Old Joe Clark (A)
  • Cripple Creek (A)
  • Salt Creek (A)
  • Cherokee Shuffle (A)
  • Blackberry Blossom (G)
  • Billy in the Lowground (C)

Songs with Lyrics:

  • Bury Me Beneath the Willow
  • Nine Pound Hammer
  • Long Journey Home
  • I’ll Fly Away
  • My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains
  • In the Pines

For kids who don’t play an instrument yet, Marbles will have an area set up where you can make your own instrument out of recycled materials.

And save the date for next month’s jam at Marbles: Sunday, March 20, 2:30-4 p.m.
