The PineCone Bluegrass learning jam at Harry’s Guitar Shop on the third Wednesday of the month is specifically for those who are learning the basics of bluegrass music and playing with other musicians, and it is open to all ages. Jef Walter, a local musician who plays bass and guitar with Charles Pettee & the Iron Mountain Messengers and other groups, will once again facilitate this month's jam to assist jam participants who want to learn basic jam etiquette before jumping into a traditional jam. This month, participants will continue talking about "chord numbers" and work on two songs that include a III (three) chord: "The Old Home Place" and "Tennessee Waltz."

"The Old Home Place" includes a III (three) chord in its verses, and a II (two) chord in its chorus. We'll sing "The Old Home Place" in the key of A (that means "key of G with your capo on 2" for most banjo and guitar players).

Jef notes, "I would sing "Tennessee Waltz" in the key of D myself, but Natalie (from The Carolina PineCones) sings it in the key of G--that's a popular key for female singers and those with higher voices to sing "Tennessee Waltz." So, maybe we'll try it in both keys, as an example of changing a song's key to fit the lead singer's voice. Download the chord charts for "The Old Home Place" and "Tennessee Waltz"
