Tim O'Brien and The Banjo Tramps, featuring Jan Fabricius, JD Hutchison, & Old Man Luedecke

Saturday, 2018, January 27 - 7:30pm
2 E. South Street
Raleigh, NC 27601

For this special concert, Tim O’Brien performs with Jan Fabricius, JD Hutchison, and Old Man Luedecke, three artists O’Brien has been collaborating with individually for several years. Collectively, they refer to themselves as "The Banjo Tramps."

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church, and after seeing Doc Watson on TV, he became a lifelong devotee of old time and bluegrass music. Over the years, he has released 15 solo albums in addition to collaborations with his sister Mollie O’Brien, songwriter Darrell Scott, and noted old time musician Dirk Powell. His newest release, Where the River Meets the Road, features songs from his native West Virginia, including bluegrass and Americana covers from songwriters Hazel Dickens, Billy Edd Wheeler, and Bill Withers alongside heartfelt autobiographical originals.

Mandolinist and vocalist Fabricius is O’Brien’s partner, and in 2015, they launched the digital download label Short Order Sessions (SOS), which releases a new track every month. Hutchison is known primarily for his instrumental versatility and bluegrass, country rock, and folkish-bluesish compositions. He also wrote three songs that were later recorded by Hot Rize. His influences include Robert Johnson, George Jones, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bill Monroe, as well as a variety of classical music. Born to a musical family in the Appalachian region of southeastern Ohio, he grew up with a strong affection and affinity for tradition-based string music. He released a new album last year, You and the World Outside, produced by O’Brien along with John Edwards. Old Man Luedecke and O’Brien recorded their third collaboration, Domestic Eccentric, in Luedecke’s hand-built cabin home in Nova Scotia. The two last worked together on Luedecke’s 2012 release, Tender is the Night, which was nominated for a Juno, listed for the Polaris Prize, and it won Album of the Year at Canada’s prestigious East Coast Music Awards.
