Dawn Landes came to PineCone with an idea.
She’d found a songbook at a used bookstore years ago and couldn’t put it down. She said, “The songs spoke to me then and lately they’ve been speaking a little louder.” Dawn wanted a stage to bring these songs to life again.
The book is The Liberated Woman’s Songbook, an iconic 1970’s publication that chronicles the women’s liberation movement in song from the 1800’s to the 1970’s. “It’s unbelievable how much these stories of women’s struggle with lovers, the system and themselves still ring true today,” says Dawn of the collection.
On April 14th, Dawn and an all-star cast of area musicians will reimagine these songs. She’ll be joined by Alice Gerrard, Emily Frantz (of Watchhouse/Mandolin Orange), Rissi Palmer, Charly Lowry, Lizzy Ross (of Violet Bell) and Kamara Thomas.
“It’s an honor to get to work with this group of women. I mean, Alice Gerrard is an inspiration! She’s 88 and still writing and touring and making her voice heard,” said Dawn on stage while opening the Steel Wheels concert. “I’m excited that Emily Frantz from Watchhouse is going to sing with us too, she’s a force. Add Rissi, Kamara, Charly and Lizzy… that’s a lot of power on one stage. It’s going to be something special.”
