April 5 Event in Chapel Hill to Focus on NC Heritage Award Recipients

The North Carolina Collection and the Southern Folklife Collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host Wilson Library’s fourth edit-a-thon, where participants will create and improve Wikipedia articles about North Carolina Heritage Award winners. Join library staff and students at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science for an evening of social Wikipedia editing in Wilson Library. The program will be held on Tuesday, April 5, from 5-8:45 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience needed. A brief workshop on the basics of Wikipedia editing will be offered at the start of the edit-a-thon.

Library resources and a list of suggested topics will be available, and a dinner of pizza, salads, and soft drinks will be provided.

Participants are asked to bring a laptop, and to enter through the main Wilson Library entrance.

This should be a fun evening of getting to learn more about North Carolina's diverse artists ahead of the North Carolina Heritage Awards Ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 8 p.m. at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. The 2016 honorees are: Maceo Parker, internationally-recognized funk, jazz and rhythm and blues musician (Kinston, Lenoir County); Sheila Kay Adams, a seventh-generation ballad singer, storyteller, and musician (Sodom Laurel, Madison County); Montagnard Dega weavers H Ju Nie and H Ngach Rahlan, who brought their mastery of spinning, dying, and weaving from the highlands of Vietnam (Greensboro, Guilford County); Houston, James and Jamie Lewis, fourth generation boatbuilders from the Harkers Island tradition (Harkers Island, Carteret County); and Marc Pruett, renowned banjo player, songwriter, and part of the renowned bluegrass band Balsam Range (Canton, Haywood County).
