Cover of the new Nixon, Blevins, & Gage CD, Pickin' on Doc, A Tribute to the Music We Love; Collage of vinyl covers from Doc Watson's albumsPineCone Bluegrass Radio Show co-host Larry Nixon and his band Nixon, Blevins, and Gage have released a new CD, "Pickin' on Doc," their tribute to Doc Watson. They'll play some selections from this new album at Quail Ridge Books and Music on Friday, March 4. And if the CD release alone is not enough of a special occasion, this will be the last music performance at this Quail Ridge Books & Music location - they'll be moving to North Hills later this year! Quail Ridge was the first store to carry a Nixon, Blevins, and Gage CD, and the trio has played many shows at Quail Ridge over the years. Save the date of Friday, March 4 to wish Quail Ridge at Ridgewood farewell and good wishes in their new location.

The new CD will be on sale for the first time that evening ($12), but you can pre-order a copy by phone 919-828-1588, or order Pickin' on Doc online via the Quail Ridge Books website.

This is the sixth album from Nixon, Blevins & Gage who all live in Raleigh. Larry Nixon is originally from Elkin, NC and does the thumb picking for this album. David Blevins is originally from Winston-Salem, and his folks grew up in  Wilkesboro. He does the flat picking. Steven Gage is originally from Columbus, Ohio and he plays the bass and harmonizes. The trio is joined on this album by Crissy Carmichael, who is originally from High Point. She plays guitar and recently took up the mandolin, and she plays mandolin on the two mandolin songs that Doc performed when he was picking with Bill Monroe.

Larry Nixon wrote the following notes about this latest CD from Nixon, Blevins, and Gage:

"While I never had the privilege of knowing or picking with Doc, Doc's music has been my musical mentor in the fullest sense. I first heard Doc's music in the early '70s when a friend loaned me his copy of Elementary Doc Watson. I was fascinated and hooked on the sounds I heard. Soon thereafter, the double album Will the Circle Be Unbroken was released, which I credit with regenerating a bluegrass and traditional music interest after the "folk scare" of the '60s. I became eager to hear everything that Doc had recorded and started collecting all the LPs I could find. (CDs were not yet available.) I have verified with the folklore folks at UNC-Chapel Hill (and several authors of books about Doc) that I was successful in collecting all of the original vinyl recordings that Doc made, including collaborations with Chet Atkins and Bill Monroe. My vinyl collection is shown on the cover of this CD. When our group started, we based our repertoire on the songs that Doc recorded, and this CD is a collection of our favorites. While no one can ever emulate Doc, we hope you will enjoy our versions of songs he liked.  We offer this CD as a respectful and loving  tribute to Doc and his music. We will miss hearing him, always."
