UNC Launches Carolina Bluegrass Band Under Leadership of Russell Johnson

The UNC Department of Music has created the Carolina Bluegrass Band under the direction of acclaimed musician and PineCone member Russell Johnson. Auditions will be held at the start of the semester; sign-ups will be available in mid-August. The Carolina Bluegrass Band welcomes both music majors and non-majors on the full range of bluegrass instruments.

Ricky Skaggs, Alice Gerrard, and More Added to IBMA's PNC Presents Wide Open Bluegrass Lineup

Eleven-time IBMA award winner Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder have been added to the Friday night lineup of the PNC presents Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, Friday, September 30. Additionally, Alice Gerrard will join previously announced Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands as a special guest Friday night and Symphony of the Mountains joins previously announced Kruger Brothers on Saturday, October 1. All performances take place at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Initial Lineup for IBMA's PNC presents Wide Open Bluegrass Announced

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Del McCoury Band, Soggy Bottom Boys, Earls of Leicester, Marty Stuart, Steep Canyon Rangers, John Cowan, Greensky Bluegrass among the performers. PNC returns as Wide Open Bluegrass presenting sponsor for fourth consecutive year. 

IBMA Accepting Volunteer Applications for 2016 World of Bluegrass and Wide Open Bluegrass

The International Bluegrass Music Association is now accepting volunteer registration for the 2016 World of Bluegrass events. Job assignment e-mails should be sent out by July 29.

IBMA Announces 2016 Bluegrass Ramble Showcase Bands

Four bands from North Carolina are among the 30 acts that have been selected for this year's Bluegrass Ramble, which will feature bands from across the U.S. and around the world.

April 5 Event in Chapel Hill to Focus on NC Heritage Award Recipients

The North Carolina Collection and the Southern Folklife Collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host Wilson Library’s fourth edit-a-thon this month, where participants will create and improve Wikipedia articles about North Carolina Heritage Award winners. The program is free and open to the public. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience needed. 

Nixon, Blevins, & Gage Release New CD

PineCone Bluegrass Radio Show co-host Larry Nixon and his band Nixon, Blevins, and Gage have released a new CD, "Pickin' on Doc," their tribute to Doc Watson. They'll play some selections from this new album at Quail Ridge Books and Music on Friday, March 4.

The Singing Stream is Now Available on DVD

In conjunction with Black History Month, Folkstreams and the Landis Family--whose roots in NC go back more than 100 years--have completed the release of A Singing Stream: Reunion, sequel to the award winning documentary A Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle. Together, this unique pair of films shows 100 years of African American History told through songs, stories, and scenes of the family’s daily life. These are the only films ever to document a single African American family and to tell their story in their own words.
