Mandolin Orange

Mandolin Orange is a duo featuring songwriter Andrew Marlin and vocalist/instrumentalist Emily Frantz. Marlin plays guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and sings vocals, while Frantz provides fiddle, rhythm guitar, harmony and occasional lead vocals. Marlin is self-taught; Frantz began her music training on the violin using the Suzuki method before breaking off to try her bow at bluegrass.

Al Batten & the Bluegrass Reunion

North Carolina's own Al Batten & the Bluegrass Reunion return to Wake Forest to kick off PineCone's third season of music at the beautiful E Carroll Joyner Park Amphitheater. Al Batten & David Turnage both bought their first banjos in the same week from the same store! They founded the Bluegrass Reunion almost 40 years ago and have been performing together ever since.

The Shady Grove Band feat. Bluegrass Music Camp Students

Join PineCone and the Town of Cary for a special night of music featuring The Shady Grove Band and students from the PineCone Bluegrass Music Camp! The camp included students ages 8-16 learning guitar, fiddle and mandolin. Charles Pettee of Shady Grove taught the guitar and mandolin tracks, while John Currie instructed the students in the fiddle and banjo tracks.

NC Songwriters Co-Op Showcase

Songwriting is almost as old as language itself, and songwriting is a vital component of traditional and folk music. While instrumental music speaks its own language, lyrics allow the audience to sing along and to relate to words and stories being shared. So for PineCone to partner with the North Carolina Songwriters' Co-Op seemed like a natural connection, and it is our pleasure to present three groups as part of a songwriters' showcase to highlight the importance of songwriting in traditional music.

The Monitors

The Monitors are an outstanding musical ensemble with a half-century of history! They have performed for celebrity artists such as Otis Redding, Millie Jackson, Major Lance, Faye Adams, Joyce Thorne, Connie Harvey, Maceo Parker and Milton Bulluck. They provided the opening concert for international stars Ray Charles and Roberta Flack, and Flack used to be the lead singer with the group. PineCone is thrilled to shine the spotlight on some of the music traditions of Eastern North Carolina Piedmont by presenting The Monitors right here in the Triangle.

Thistledown Tinkers

Thistledown Tinkers, the powerful music duo featuring Trip Rogers and Tom Eure, weave traditional Scottish and Irish music with original creations while adding a southern swagger that sets the stage on fire. Their goal is to make Celtic music that forces folks to stand up and take notice, and maybe even sing along and stomp their feet. These seasoned music veterans from NC perform with an impressive arsenal of instruments including guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, and concertina.
