Alton M. Mitchell

The multi-instrumentalist began singing and playing music at the age of four, honing his musical skills with family members, including his father, Charlie Mitchell, at events such as choir and quartet anniversaries and gospel singings. Alton cites artists such as the Nightingales, John P. Key, Shirley Caesar, F. C. Barnes, Luther Barnes, Thomas Walker, the Violinaires, Slim and the Supreme Angels, and Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers--all gospel performers from Eastern North Carolina--as key influences.

Though Mitchell generally favors traditional gospel, he's a versatile musician with the ability to play in a variety of sacred styles. He explains, "[In] Wilson County in particular there is a very, very heavy emphasis on quartet music and very, very traditional gospel music."

Mitchell's goal is ministry, and he works to reach all people through music. His musical ability, outgoing personality, and kindness have endeared him to the Wilson community. "If you go into certain denominations, you won't hear guitars, you won't hear drums. Some denominations you won't hear any old styles of music. And what I try to incorporate in my music--and I think that's what the Lord wants--is for everybody to be included."

Mitchell's choir is very active, performing locally and across the state for various events. Among their engagements have been performances for Martin Luther King, Jr., Day celebrations, and congressional meetings in Washington, DC.
