The PineCone Radio Show has been a Sunday evening tradition for families and fans of bluegrass music for decades. Tim and Larry launched the show in 1989 and showcase a mix of new and classic bluegrass. “WQDR was and is the top country station in the market,” says host Larry Nixon. “We were very excited to have the opportunity to start a bluegrass program which would reach such a large audience."

Meet the PineCone DJs

Larry Nixon is from Elkin, North Carolina, near Galax, Mount Airy, Wilkesboro and Union Grove, the heart of mountain and traditional music country. Larry has enjoyed bluegrass and playing all types of music but has returned to his "roots," the recreation and preservation of the thumb-picking styles of guitar that he first heard in the 1960s.  Larry attended NC State University and is a consulting engineer in Raleigh. Larry has been involved with PineCone since its founding.

Tim Woodall has been a student of the banjo for 50 years or so. He also has interests in many other types of music. As a studio musician, Tim has recorded pedal steel, bass, guitar and banjo. He's now retired from a sales career and from playing out like he did for 20 years with The Grass Cats. But he says he still enjoys hosting the PineCone Bluegrass Show every other Sunday as he and Larry have done since 1989.
