PineCone Celebrates Elizabeth Cotten Day

Elizabeth Cotten was born on January 5, 1893 in Carrboro, North Carolina. Her innovative guitar and banjo playing influenced generations of players. Her songs “Freight Train,” and “Shake Sugaree,” have been performed by scores of artists including Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Doc Watson, Taj Mahal and Dom Flemons.

Elizabeth Cotten was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Her hometown of Carrboro, NC honors her each year on her birthday with a ceremony and formal proclamation. “Libba Cotten continues to inspire musicians around the world and occupies a special place in Carrboro’s history and our vibrant and enduring local music culture,” said Carrboro Mayor Damon Seils. “I invite you to join us in this opportunity to celebrate her life and legacy.”
